What are your reasons to do your best every day?

Most of the time when I struggle to complete a task, it's not that I lack the discipline but I lack the meaning behind why I should do it.
For instance, I used to look for reasons why I should go to the gym and I would come up with empty reasons that sounded good but held little to no meaning in my own life. I not only ended up not going to the gym, but having a list of reasons only made me feel worse about not going.
The truth is, I couldn't be bothered to go to the gym to look good or get healthy. I couldn't care less about increasing my energy levels or improving the quality of my sleep. I didn't care that it helped me think better at my work. While these are all benefits I would enjoy if I was already going to the gym, they weren't enough to outweigh the time, effort, and energy I needed to begin paying in order to attain them.
So, what did I care about?
I cared about being able to set a good example for my family to begin taking care of themselves and taking responsibility for inspiring a healthier lifestyle in the lives of the people I care about. I knew by not taking care of myself, I was only contributing to my family's poor and unhealthy lifestyle. I wanted to contribute to my family living a longer and healthier life.
I cared about knowing that I was willing to look after myself even if no one else in the world would. I didn't want to be the person who couldn't look at myself every time I walked by a mirror because of how shameful I felt, knowing that I wasn't doing what I knew I should do. I didn't want to let my embarrassment and shame continue chipping away at my self-trust and self-respect, breaking into other areas of my life.
I cared about how others would look at me and treat me when they saw me. I wanted to communicate to others that I was the kind of person with a grounded set of values and a high level of self-mastery, not someone struggling to get even the most basic aspect of their life in order. I didn't want people to question my work because of who I was outside of my work.
Yet, if I had weighed going to the gym to increase my productivity, I would've never started going. If you are struggling to begin a new adventure that you feel drawn to or to stay consistent in the adventures you begin, take some time to think about the reasons behind your journey. Make them your own personal reasons and stories that are unique to you. They may serve you for a lifetime.
